What Grade Level Learns Grammar Mechanics?
Grammar mechanics skills build steadily across elementary school, with each grade adding new rules on top of the last:
Kindergarten–1st Grade: Capitalizing the first word of a sentence and the pronoun “I,” and using end punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points) to complete a sentence.
2nd Grade: Capitalizing holidays, product names, and geographic names, plus using commas in greetings and closings for letters, and apostrophes in contractions and possessives.
3rd Grade: Capitalizing titles of books, movies, and other works, using commas in addresses, and correctly punctuating dialogue with quotation marks.
4th–5th Grade: More advanced punctuation including commas with introductory words and coordinating conjunctions, and correct use of colons and semicolons in compound sentences.
