What are Sight Words?

Simply put, sight words are words that cannot be sounded out phonetically. They are usually high-frequency words that appear often in student texts and grade-level sight word lists can be developed from them. We’ve created free sight word lists you can print and use with your students today!

Why are Sight Words Important?

Because sight words cannot be sounded out, it’s important that students memorize them for fluid reading. It is important to remember that these grade-level sight word lists are simply recommendations. Many families and teachers choose to wait to introduce sight words until the kindergarten or first-grade year. Whenever you decide your child is ready, we have many sight word worksheets, games and printables to help your students memorize these important words.

Fry’s Sight Words

You might also know about Fry’s First 1000 Sight Words List! This list is similar to Dolch Sight Words and starts students in the first grade with Fry’s First 100. This too is a very helpful list of sight words for students to learn.

What about Phonics?

While sight words are very important for early readers to memorize, it’s just as important (if not more) that students learn and understand phonics as well. The science of reading is clear that students should learn both phonics and sight words as part of a comprehensive learning-to-read program. That is why we’ve included both sight words and phonics in our hands-on Learn to Read Curriculum.
