These free cell biology printables help middle school students compare plant cells and animal cells, identify cell organelles, and explore the different types of cells that make up living things. Download PDF cell comparison charts, Venn diagrams, labeling charts, worksheets, and quizzes below.
Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell
Types of Cells
All living things are made of cells, but not all cells are alike. Animal cells have a nucleus and a flexible cell membrane but no cell wall. Plant cells have a nucleus, as stiff cell wall, and chloroplasts to capture sunlight to make food. Bacterial cells are tiny with no nucleus, and each one is a complete living organism made of just one cell.
Specialized Cells
In multicellular organisms, not all cells are the same. Cells take on special jobs, and their shape often matches their job.
Other Specialized Cells
Nerve, blood, and muscle cells are just a few of the many specialized cells in living things. The human body has about 200 different types of cells, each shaped for its job. Other examples include:
- Skin cells: flat and tightly packed to protect the body
- Bone cells: help build and repair strong bones
- Fat cells: store energy for the body to use later
- Root hair cells: long, thin plant cells that help roots take in water
- Guard cells: pairs of plant cells that open and close tiny holes in leaves to let gases in and out
