What Are Human Body Organs?

Organs are the body’s built-in workers. Each one has a specific job that helps keep us alive, healthy, and growing every day. The heart pumps blood, the lungs bring in oxygen, and the stomach breaks down food. Together, these organs and many more form a team that keeps the whole body running smoothly. Some organs work alone, like the brain, while others work in pairs, like the lungs. Learning what each organ does is one of the first steps toward understanding how the human body works as a whole.

When to Teach Body Organs

Most students get their first introduction to body organs in the early elementary years, learning simple names like heart, lungs, and stomach through picture books and basic charts. A deeper study of organs and how they work as a system typically begins around fourth grade, when students are ready to connect structure to function. By upper elementary and middle school, students can handle a fuller list of organs, including the kidneys, liver, and intestines, as they start to understand how body systems work together to keep us healthy.
