How to Write Capital Letter R in Cursive

Start your pencil at the topline. Bring your stroke downward and to the baseline. Without picking up your pencil, retrace your path, back up, until just before the topline. As you near the topline pull your stroke up and to the right to create a c-like shape between the top and midlines. At the midline make a diagonal stroke to the right. At the baseline, curve up slightly to create a tail to meet the next letter.

How to Write Lowercase Letter r in Cursive

D’Nealian has a lead-in, so you will start your pencil on the baseline, curving upwards towards the midline. Once you reach the midline, make a small stroke right along the midline and then return back down to the baseline while curving slightly right. As you near the baseline begin to curve back up and to the midline again to create the tail.

How to Connect Capital A in Cursive

Uppercase letter R in cursive ends at the baseline making it the ideal position to connect to the next letter. The final stroke of capital cursive R ends in a downstroke towards the baseline. As such, instruct students to begin curving the downstroke line ever so slightly as they reach the baseline in preparation to come back up for the next letter. See the example above in pink.

How to Connect Lowercase Letter R in Cursive

Lowercase letter r is similarly easy to connect to the next letter. Because the lowercase cursive r also ends at the baseline, the “tail” of the letter r is in the perfect position to connect to the next letter. Instruct students to be ready for the next letter as they come up from the tail.
