How to Write Capital Letter U in Cursive
Start your pencil at the topline. When writing the letter u, start by making a small loop at the top of the line. Then, curve the line downwards, keeping it close to the loop but not touching it.
Continue the curve downwards and then make a small loop at the bottom. From the bottom loop, bring the line back up to the topline. Follow that line back down to the baseline and make a small hook at the end to finish the letter creating a tail.
How to Write Lowercase Letter u in Cursive
The D’Nealian style has a lead-in, so you will start your pencil on the baseline, moving upwards towards the midline. Once you reach the midline, return back down your path until you near the baseline. As you near the baseline begin to curve back up and to the midline, Return back down your vertical stroke, and curve slightly before the baseline again to create the tail.

How to Connect Capital U in Cursive
Uppercase letter U in cursive ends at the baseline making it the ideal position to connect to the next letter. The final stroke of capital cursive U ends in a downstroke towards the baseline. As such, instruct students to begin curving the downstroke line ever so slightly as they reach the baseline in preparation to come back up for the next letter. See the example above in pink.
How to Connect Lowercase Letter U in Cursive
Lowercase letter u is similarly easy to connect to the next letter. Because the lowercase cursive u also ends at the baseline, the “tail” of the letter u is in the perfect position to connect to the next letter. Instruct students to be ready for the next letter as they come up from the tail.
