Lung Function & Breathing

This reference chart breaks down the six main jobs of the lungs, from bringing in oxygen to working with the heart. Each function is explained in a short, factual sentence that names the body part involved.

Parts of the Human Lungs

Alveoli: Tiny, balloon-like air sacs at the end of the bronchioles where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.

Apex: The rounded top point of a lung.

Base: The wide, curved bottom of a lung, which rests on the diaphragm.

Bronchioles: The tiny branching tubes inside the lungs that carry air from the bronchi to the alveoli.

Bronchus: One of the two main tubes that branch off the trachea and lead into each lung.

Cardiac Notch: A small dip in the left lung that makes space for the heart.

Left Lung: The smaller of the two lungs, made up of two lobes, with a notch that makes room for the heart.

Lower Lobe: The bottom section of a lung.

Middle Lobe: The middle section found only in the right lung.

Pleura: The thin, protective double layer of tissue that surrounds each lung.

Right Lung: The larger of the two lungs, made up of three lobes.

Trachea: The tube that carries air from your throat down to your lungs. Also called the windpipe.

Upper Lobe: The top section of a lung.

How the Lungs Work

The lungs have one main job: bring oxygen in and push carbon dioxide out. Every time you breathe in, air travels down through your airways and fills millions of tiny alveoli inside your lungs. Oxygen from that air passes into your blood through the thin walls of the alveoli, while carbon dioxide, a waste gas your body no longer needs, moves in the opposite direction and leaves your body when you breathe out. The lungs cannot do this work alone. A muscle called the diaphragm sits just below the lungs and does most of the heavy lifting, pulling downward to make room for air to rush in, then relaxing to help push air back out. Working together, the lungs and diaphragm breathe for you around 20,000 times a day, almost always without you ever having to think about it.

Fun Facts About the Human Lungs

Big Lungs: If you could spread your lungs out flat, they would cover about half of a tennis court.

Busy Breathing: You breathe about 20,000 times every single day, and most of the time you never even notice it.

Uneven Pair: Your right lung is a little bigger than your left lung because your left lung has to share space with your heart.

No Muscles Inside: Your lungs do not have muscles of their own. They rely on your diaphragm and rib muscles to help them expand and shrink.

Long Airways: Some scientists estimate that if you stretched out all the airways inside your lungs, they would measure over a thousand miles.

Floating Lungs: Healthy lungs are so full of tiny air pockets that they can actually float in water.

First Breath: A newborn baby takes its very first breath within seconds of being born, which inflates its lungs for the first time.

Millions of Air Sacs: Scientists estimate your lungs contain hundreds of millions of tiny alveoli, more than the population of many countries.

Hiccup Helper: A hiccup happens when your diaphragm suddenly jerks, making you gasp for air.

Extra Lung Power: Laughing, singing, and yawning all use more lung power than regular quiet breathing.
