What are Homophones?
A homophone is a word that sounds exactly like another word but has a different spelling and a different meaning. For example, the words sun and son sound identical when spoken aloud, but sun refers to the star in our sky and son refers to a male child. Homophones can come in pairs (hear / here) or triplets (to / too / two), and the only way to know which word is correct is to use the meaning of the sentence as a context clue. Learning to recognize and correctly use homophones strengthens both spelling accuracy and reading comprehension.
