What is a Common Noun?

A common noun (sometimes called a simple noun, or noun) is a word that names a general person, place, thing, or idea. It doesn’t refer to anything or anyone specific and is not capitalized lilke a proper noun unless it’s at the beginning of a sentence. The simplest way to teach common nouns is to help your students memorize the following definitions;

“A noun is a person, place or thing.”
