How to Use Our Short a Words Resources

The short a sound is one of the five short vowel sounds in the English language — a, e, i, o, and u. You hear the short a sound in everyday words like “cat,” “ham,” and “clap.” Unlike long vowel sounds, short vowels do not say their name. Instead, the short a makes the /ă/ sound, like the “a” in “map” or “sad.” Short a symbol looks like this /ă/.

Short a words are most often found in closed syllables — syllables that end with a consonant sound, like -an, -at, -ap, and -ad. That’s why words like “bat,” “clap,” and “sad” all share the same short a sound, making it easier to read identifying these patterns.
