What is a Long O Word?

The long o sound is part of 5 long vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, and u. All of these ‘long’ vowel sounds say their name, unlike short vowel sounds. Long o says /o/ like in “nose”. There are several spelling patterns of long vowel ‘o’ sounds including o_e (or silent e), oe, oa, and ow. O says its long sound as an open syllable, which is any syllable that ends with a vowel. For long o sounds, an example includes ho/me with the o_e sound or gr/ow with the ending sound of -ow.
