Number sense refers to a group of key math abilities that allow students to work with and manipulate numbers. Having number sense means being able to visualize and talk comfortably about numbers, as well as understand their relative values and how they can be put together and taken apart. It is an essential foundation for students to develop strong math skills and problem-solving abilities.

The dictionary definition of number sense is the ability to use and understand numbers, including knowing their relative values, using them to make decisions, and employing flexible strategies for arithmetic operations. It also involves developing skills in counting, measuring, estimating, and recognizing number patterns. Basically, number sense is the ability to understand and work with numbers in a way that helps us know how big or small numbers are, compare them to each other, and see patterns in them. With number sense, we can talk about numbers easily and understand how they can be split or added together.

How to Teach Number Sense
To teach number sense, teachers can use fun and interactive activities (like those above) that help students understand and work with numbers.
