How to use our Printable Tangrams
Tangrams are an ancient Chinese puzzle consisting of seven flat geometric pieces, called “tans,” that are used to create various shapes and figures. The seven pieces consist of:
- 2 large right triangles (the same size)
- 1 medium right triangle
- 2 small right triangles (the same size)
- 1 square
- 1 parallelogram

Traditional Tangram Puzzle Basics
When arranged in their most basic formation, these pieces form a square. The beauty of tangrams lies in how these simple pieces can be rearranged to create thousands of different figures – from basic geometric shapes to silhouettes of animals, people, objects, and abstract designs.
- All pieces must be used in each design
- Pieces cannot overlap
- Pieces must lie flat
- All pieces must touch at least one other piece
- The parallelogram can be flipped over (unlike the other pieces)
