Preparing Assessment Materials: To administer our Fry sight word assessments, you’ll need to print one teacher checklist for each student you are assessing. This assessment checklist will serve as the progress tracker for students throughout all four quarters of the school year. Next, print one grade-level set of Fry sight word assessment cards for each grade level you’re wanting to assess. If you’ll be using these assessment cards with students year after year, we recommend laminating them before you cut them apart. Student assessment pages are half-sheet templates.
Fry Sight Word Assessment Process: Provide students with the assessment card(s) you are testing on. You may want to offer students a piece of paper to track words by each row, so they are not overwhelmed or distracted by other words on the card. Have students use their fingers to touch and read each word from left to right, and top to bottom. The teacher checklist follows the same order as the student cards making it easy to follow. Make a “check” for words read correctly and an “x” for words read incorrectly.
Follow-Up: This assessment page provides four opportunities to mark student progress over the course of one school year. We recommend testing students once per quarter.
